Reflexology, Massage Therapy, and Acupressure, What’s the Difference?

Let me make clear, I am coming from a point of view of knowing something about Reflexology, and I am not a practictioner in Massage Therapy and Acupressure. I am certainly not trying to offer one as better than the others, it’s just useful to look at what separates these therapies and what they have in common.

Reflexology

Pressure is applied to specific points on the feet, hands, or ears, using a thumb or finger “walking” technique.

The belief is that the body is mapped out in the feet, hands or ears and that working these points can help bring the body to balance and optimum working level.

Modern reflexology was developed from ancient Chinese and Egyptian practices.

Massage Therapy

Muscles, tendons, and soft tissue in the whole body are manipulated. Techniques such as kneading, friction and tapping are used, along with the use of tools. There are different massage styles, and techniques will vary between them.

Massage therapy is mainly based on anatomy and physiology, used to aid muscular issues, but also to bring about relaxation and enhance well-being.

It has been used throughout history in the western and eastern world, with varying techniques, depending on the style; Swedish, Thai, Shiatsu.

Acupressure

In acupressure, it is believed that there are energy pathways called meridians in the body and pressure is applied at set points along these meridians to aid better health. There is a link to acupuncture, but no needles are used.

Fingers, thumbs or tools are used to apply pressure, with the aim of bringing about better flow and balance of energy.

This therapy originates from the practices of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

I have benefitted from all 3 of these therapies, and they are sought out for differing reasons. But they all contribute to a healthier and happier life!
